Our First Trip to Scotland with Baby Loti – Road Trip to Isle of Skye

By Money Saving Daddy

After our trip to Japan, Osaka/Kyoto. We have another trip going to Scotland.

From Singapore to Scotland actually is a 16.5 hours flight time. But there are no direct flights to Scotland, Edinburgh.

So instead of taking a 16 hours flight to London, we choose to transit in Dubai. So it is a 8 hours flight on each leg. As we are not sure if Baby Loti will be very cranky in long haul flights.

Singapore to Edinburgh

We abit sway that we sat next to a cranky baby. So we opt to upgrade Baby Loti to business class. It was a wonderful decision as the business class is pretty empty and Baby Loti gets to lie flat on the seats.

Transit - 5 hours

This transit gaolat. We need to idle for 5 hours while waiting for the next flight to Scotland. Luckily beforehand we already googled their lounge.

If you are a DBS Altitude card holder, you are entitled 2 free lounge visits per year. So we heng heng got this free entry and can nua there for hours.

Got free food, and free drink where to find?

The only thing we fear is we nua too much and overshot the timing.

Introduction of Edinburgh

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and famous for their Edinburgh castle. Weather is cold throughout the year. We were there in June and the temperature was like 10°c to 18°c . And pretty windy at times.

Getting Around Edinburgh

The easiest way to get around Edinburgh is to travel by their bus and trams. They have day tickets to get around the city.

A single trip to Or from the airport is only £6.00 if you purchase online.

And their trams are very spacious and baby stroller friendly too.

Arrived to Edinburgh Airport

The airport looks pretty small. And we are so tired from the plane ride + the 5 hours transit. Took the airport transfer and got to the city centre hotel.

See: Edinburgh Castle

The castle is a huge fortress that you can see from afar. But to get to the entrance of the castle with a baby stroller is really far.

Need to walk up the slopes on the cobblestone path.

See: Nelson Monument

Near to our hotel, there is this Nelson Monument. I see from Google review got 1700+ . I thinking should be pretty haps lah. So we went up.

View is good lah. Because you can see the city view from this far. But climb very high leh.

Jin tiring you know.

Eat: Oink - Haggis Pork

Because with a stroller, very challenging to maneuver around. So heng heng, we saw they have the deliveroo app. I don’t use Deliveroo in Singapore, but in Scotland, it’s my first time.

So they also have first month trial for using deliveroo. Why not lah!

Scrolling through the app, they also have this famous Oink restaurant that sells Haggis pork.

It tasted pretty yummy, and of course I got bring along my Lingham chilli sauce. I scare they don’t have chilli sauce mah.

Day 2: Start of Road Trip

We began our road trip! We were still thinking if we should visit the isle of Skye. The route is sibei long one if you want to go the big round.

Car Rental: Europcar

Collected our car at the airport - Europcar.

Process is seamless, just that they require the credit card name to be the same as your NRIC.

And not many people put their NRIC name in their credit card.

But heng lah. I have la.

The route to our Airbnb stay is around 3 hours. So halfway we need to find a place to have our dinner.

Driving on the main roads seem pretty easy, and it is similar to Singapore where it is right hand drive.

And the best thing: There are no tolls in Scotland!

Dinner: Snack Shack

Located en-route to Fort Augustus, Snack Shack is 2 hours away from Edinburgh Airport. Of course, before we go in we read up abit on the reviews lah. Seem pretty decent.

Airbnb Stay: Conifers Bed & Breakfast

This is one of the few Airbnb that welcome kids. The host Margaret, probably in her 70s is very nice. She waited for us as we reached there late.

And also asked what breakfast do we prefer the next day.

Day 3:

Breakfast at Conifers Bed & Breakfast

Margaret woke up early to prepare our breakfast. We finished washing up around 9.30am. We are those travellers that sibei relaxed and nua one.

So our breakfast got toasted bread, bacon, eggs, tomato and mushroom. She also got serve us orange juice, coffee and tea. Fantastic breakfast to start our day!

Start of the Isle of Skye Road Trip

Start of our Road trip to the Isle of Skye! We were still thinking how should be start the road trip. Whether clockwise or anticlockwise.

Coffee: Harry’s Coffee

So this road trip, machiam eat air trip. Really is just mountains, cliffs and greenery all the way. But we also need to take a coffee break. Review say this one not bad. So we come here and lim kopi.

Harry’s coffee is located near the Skye Bridge. You drive past the bridge then it is on the left side. You can see the water view from the Harry’s coffee place also.

See: Portree Harbour

Portee Harbour is a picturesque harbour at Portree. We came here because we google and saw they have very colorful and cute buildings. So must come here and take picture lah. The only thing you need to go to the other side to take picture of the whole color buildings and parking space is limited.

The Drive

See: Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls Viewpoint

We went on to take the A855 route anti clockwise, because seems like got more things to see on this route. And we chanced upon this view point which is by the sea but at a height. A good parking space and also awesome view.

Driving on A855 along Isle of Skye

So hor, the consideration I have for doing a round trip is because I scare driving on the 1 lane road on A855. Imagine the long distance and you need to be mindful of the opposite cars coming also. Although it is 1 lane, but certain intervals of the road got a pocket for you to drive in and wait for the oncoming car to pass you.

Then you can carry on along the route.

If traffic is heavy, driving this route needs a lot of patience one. It is like playing musical chair also.

See: Duntulm Sea Viewpoint

Another magnificent viewpoint along A855. This place has a lot sheeps roaming around as well. We went pretty near the sheep, but abit scare they ki siao and come bite. So we maintain a safety distance.

Dinner: The Galley Cafe and Takeaway

We overrun our time for dinner liao. Because from the Galley to our Airbnb will take more than 2 hours. We have to really chiong back if we decided to dine here. Plus, we have Baby Loti to feed also.

So we decided to dabao our dinner, eat outside the bench and chop chop rush back to our Airbnb.

It is 7pm when we reach the Galley cafe also, so if plus makan 20mins and drive back. I will reach our Airbnb at 10pm lor.

But hor, this dinner place must try their food. They have this special crab like thingy, cooked with garlic butter. Sibei delicious.

We just whack as fast as possible.

Day 4: Home Coming

Similar to the day before, we still have breakfast. So this time round is do a detour to Glenfinnan You know the chut chut train in Harry Potter?

Yup, this is the one at Glennafin in Scotland. It is a slow 20 mins detour to get to this place.

See: Glenfinnan Viaduct Viewpoint

This train at the viaduct got timing one. Since we happen to drive on this day, might as well go and see.

But the only fear is the parking. Really very difficult to find a near parking lot and we had to comb the whole place until we found a lot that is very near and make a dash for it. There were alot of people leaving when we dashed in.

But still we managed to hear the chut chut sound and take some pictures of it.

Coffee: Glenfinnan Visitor Centre

A short coffee / pee break here. And after the train left, the whole place like quite desserted also. It is only happening when the train pass by.

We initially wanted to take the train but the tickets are fully booked liao.

Lunch: Lochleven Seafood Cafe

This seafood cafe is located at a very ulu location. Sibei mafan to drive up then you need to drive back the route again to get to the airport. But the reviews say this place is good.

Then it must be good lah.

So we ordered, Oysters, their sibei good flat fish, scallops and their lala.

Overall, really quite good. I would drop by again if I got the time.

Drive Back to Edinburgh Airport

We need to be at the airport 2 hours before and need to return the car. So we return our car earlier so that we can chillax abit after all the rushing.

Somemore, it is another 7 hours to Dubai, transit 3 hours again and another 3 hours back to Singapore.

Sibei adventurous and short road trip!
